With the passage of​ Act 2015-3, the Alabama State Department of Education, Public Charter Schools, was established. Its public charter school responsibilities include, but are not limited to, promulgating rules and regulations, developing guidelines for public charter school authorizers and Local Education Agencies, providing support, and responding to requests for information.

The Athens City Board of Education as Charter Authorizer (ACBE) is pleased to invite proposals for a high-quality public charter school with priority given to conversion public charter schools seeking to open in the 2021-22 school year or thereafter. The ACBE is charged with approving quality charter proposals that meet identified educational needs and promote a diversity of educational choices, and declining to approve weak or inadequate charter proposals.
